Tabitha D. Furlong, CPA, CFE is the Director of State Audit for the Tennessee Comptroller of the Treasury. In this role, she oversees financial, compliance, information systems, and performance audits that strengthen transparency and accountability across Tennessee’s state government. Her leadership guides audit teams that examine the financial statements and operations of state departments, agencies, and higher education institutions, ensuring adherence to auditing standards, federal regulations, and sound fiscal management.

Tabitha began her career with the Comptroller’s Office in 2002 as a financial and compliance auditor and has held positions of increasing responsibility, including legislative audit manager. She was named director in 2026.

Her career in public service also includes nearly three years with the Bureau of Ethics and Campaign Finance, where she performed financial audits of campaign accounts and reviewed campaign finance disclosure reports.

A Certified Public Accountant and Certified Fraud Examiner, Tabitha holds a Master of Science in Accounting and Information Systems from Middle Tennessee State University, and a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration with a concentration in accounting from Austin Peay State University. In 2025, she received a certification of completion for the Senior Executives in State and Local Government program from Harvard University’s Kennedy School Executive Education program.

Tabitha is a member of the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners and the Association of Government Accountants. She is especially proud of leading the team that managed the State of Tennessee’s Annual Comprehensive Financial Report audit for eight years, earning the Government Finance Officers Association Award of Financial Reporting Achievement in 2020.

A Nashville native, Tabitha enjoys spending time with her husband, Andrew, and their daughter. Outside of work, she can often be found cheering at swim meets, reading a good book, hiking Tennessee’s scenic parks, or exploring national treasures.
