Former Volunteer Fire Department Treasurer Indicted After Misappropriating $26,000

An investigation by the Tennessee Comptroller’s Office has resulted in the indictment of Peggy Long, the former treasurer of the Lake View Fire Department, Incorporated (LVFD) in Hawkins County. The investigation began after LVFD officers reported suspicious financial activity.
Investigators determined that Long wrote seven unauthorized checks to herself between January and March 2025, totaling at least $26,000. She deposited the checks into her personal bank account and recorded vague or misleading memo lines such as “work” or “501 C.” Long told investigators the checks were not for LVFD-related work or expenses, but rather for her personal use.
On June 16, 2025, LVFD officers removed Long as treasurer. On July 28, 2025, Long deposited a $26,000 check from her personal funds into the LVFD bank account to reimburse the department.
Based upon this investigation, on August 11, 2025, the Hawkins County Grand Jury indicted Peggy Long on one count of theft of property $10,000 or more but less than $60,000.
“Volunteer fire departments play a vital role in protecting communities, and they must maintain sound financial oversight,” said Comptroller Mumpower. “These organizations are often trusted with public and donated funds, and their officers must ensure those funds are safeguarded by requiring dual signatures on checks and properly segregating financial duties.”
