Former Tennessee Tech Fraternity Alumni Treasurer Indicted After Misappropriating More Than $214,000
An investigation by the Tennessee Comptroller’s Office, working in conjunction with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, has resulted in the indictment of James “Jamie” Hargis, the former treasurer of the TTU Kappa Sigma Alumni Association.
The alumni association supports alumni of the Kappa Sigma fraternity chapter at Tennessee Technological University and owns and maintains a fraternity house used by undergraduate chapter members. Hargis served as the association’s treasurer from approximately February 2017 until September 15, 2025, when he was removed from the position.
Investigators determined that Hargis misappropriated at least $214,129.23 from the alumni association. He used multiple bank accounts and an instant check cashing account to divert association money into personal accounts. He used association funds to pay personal expenses such as sports wagering and paying personal debts.
The misappropriation included at least $189,418.71 taken from the alumni association’s bank account, $17,500 in rent payments from undergraduate fraternity members, and $7,210.52 in donations, dues, golf tournament registration fees, and other collections from alumni and donors.
Investigators determined Hargis repaid or personally paid alumni association expenses totaling $160,079.51, leaving $54,049.72 unrecovered. His actions also left several association bills unpaid, including maintenance, insurance, and tax bills related to the fraternity house, as well as bills associated with charity golf tournaments.
Based upon this investigation, on September 28, 2026, the Putnam County Grand Jury indicted James Nathan Hargis on one count of theft over $60,000. He also faces additional theft charges related to separate matters.
